On display as part of the exhibition Aig Muir:At Sea at An Lanntair, Stornaway, Outer Hebrides
Dec 23 – Jan 24 +
In this first presentation of my research project ‘Navigating Technologies’ I am presenting a series of digital prints alongside an experimental film. This experimental film uses layers of projected digital and 16mm film from our residency in which we sailed to St Kilda to paint a journey at sea. I use this method of creating film by layering projections to find a physical way to edit and collage images from intangible formats.
The film explores how we have learned to navigate the sea, as a metaphor for how we manage our journey into new oceans of digital information we live in today. It invites us to reflect on our relationship with technology, connectivity and mental health as we live through such change.
Alongside the film I am presenting a set of digital prints, that highlight key moments in the story, and make them tangible. The relationship between the layers both allows for chance and subjective interpretations whilst also illustrating chapters of the project. Those of introducing the metaphor of the ocean as digital space, the possibility and risk, the journey of learning to navigate at sea and how we look to develop equivalent support for our safety in the new digital spaces we live in.
Having a focused period of time, and a sublime experience has helped to project this project forward, connect with new communities and considerations, and the opportunity to exhibit the work in public is a real privilege. I am committed to expanding this project from here and hope to create space and contribute to important conversations for all of us.
